Tips for Preventing Mold in Your Home (Part 2)

Preventing mold from growing in areas of high humidity in your Reno home can be difficult. Once mold takes hold, you have a major mess and possible renovation on your hands. The team at TEK Inspections recommends following these tips to keep this hazardous substance from taking its hold within your home.

Crawlspace or Basement

Most crawlspaces and basements are breeding grounds for residential mold. Because they’re underneath the house and lower in the ground, moisture can easily seep in through cracks in the foundation. Consider these tips to protect this area of your home:

  • Watch for any leaks and have them repaired as soon as possible.
  • Use a vapor barrier between the concrete and the subfloor.
  • Rather than having carpet in your basement, consider painting the concrete or using area rugs.

Laundry Room

Another common area that is susceptible to mold growth is the laundry room. If an accident occurs with the washing machine, water can seep into the wall and floorboards and cause mold to grow inside the structure of your home. Follow these tips for a dry and healthy laundry room:

  • Check that the dryer vent is clear of any obstructions and is venting outside.
  • Clean your dryer vent once a year or as needed.
  • Don’t leave damp clothes in your hamper. Instead, wash and dry them right away.

Bathroom

Like the laundry room, the bathroom is a hotspot for mold to spread. Although this space uses a lot of water, following these steps can help prevent mold from growing:

  • Open a window or turn on the exhaust fan to let steam out when you shower.
  • Don’t leave damp towels on the floor. Hang them up or wash them instead.
  • Be on the lookout for leaks around the toilet, under the sink, and around the bathtub.
